My Take
This is one of my favorite series set in Britain, though written by an American author. I was first introduced to them years ago (1995? 1996?) while on vacation. The person I was traveling with gave me her copy of Playing for the Ashes because she just couldn’t get into it. I loved it, so I finished that one, went back to the start of the series, and have been following it ever since.
These books are unusually long and dense for mysteries, with lots of backstory and context on the characters involved in the current mystery plus info about the personal lives of the main police and related characters. They’re mysteries, yes, but rich in detail and human interactions and not something you can or should rush through. Be prepared to settle in. The most recent book is set in Cornwall, which we happened to be visiting when I read it. Great sense of place here and in the other books in the series. George often covers a topic of social interest alongside the mystery.
