Two years after his untimely death, Matthew Swift finds himself breathing once again, lying in bed in his London home.
Except that it’s no longer his bed, or his home. And the last time this sorcerer was seen alive, an unknown assailant had gouged a hole so deep in his chest that his death was irrefutable…despite his body never being found.
He doesn’t have long to mull over his resurrection, though, or the changes that have been wrought upon him. His only concern now is vengeance. Vengeance upon his monstrous killer and vengeance upon the one who brought him back.
My Take
I found the book very slow going. There is lots of description — which I loved — but it also slowed down the story. The main character is possessed so it’s difficult to get to know him. Which I’m sure is by design, but it doesn’t make the story easier to read. What kept me going was the setting. London is my favorite place on earth and there is so much detail about the city, its history, its inhabitants, its lore. Loved that part of it and how it tied into an urban magic system. If it had been set in any other city this may honestly have been a DNF. A couple of the secondary characters show promise. I may return to the series, but I need a change of pace right now.
Kate Griffin also writes as Claire North (I have three books by Claire North but haven’t read any yet), Catherine Webb, and Kate Webb.
